Local Authorities

We work closely with local authority enforcement officers to make sure food law is applied throughout the food chain.

Food Standards Scotland gives information on food safety legislation, and provides enforcement officers with all the tools they need to ensure that food safety and legal requirements are maintained and monitored in their area.

The Scottish Food Enforcement Liaison Committee was set up to co-ordinate food law enforcement, sampling and surveillance activities of Scottish local authorities and comprises representatives of central and local government, consumers and industry.

For information on Local Authority Audit by Food Standards Scotland, see our Audit pages and for Approved Premises, see our Approvals pages.

The responsibilities of all the enforcement authorities in the UK are set out in the Single Integrated National Control Plan for the UK.
